Mathematics

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life, many forms of employment, science and technology, medicine, the economy, the environment and development and in public decision-making. Different cultures have contributed to the development and application of mathematics. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to that problem, or suddenly sees hidden connections.

Science

Science is the quest for understanding and knowledge of the physical and natural world through observation, questioning, exploration and experimentation. It starts as soon as children enter our Reception class with play based activities and exploratory fun. You may find a teacher or two dressed up as a famous scientist or a class of 5 year olds going to an Ugly Bug Ball.

As children progress through the school, they have extended use of the amazing facilities which range from our outdoor classroom and beautiful  lake to a fully equipped science laboratory and woodland and wildlife areas. The children are encouraged to question the world around them and help to create experiments to further their understanding.

Their world is further opened up to them by going to Battisborough where they  enhance their studies of the natural world and make links to other subjects such as Geography and Maths. The children follow an enhanced version of the  National Curriculum until Y3 where they begin the curriculum which leads them into Common Entrance. Topics range from evolution and space to healthy living and the study of cells. Outings to museums and exciting guest speakers combined with our amazing facilities gives children the opportunity to begin their journey of exploration of our amazing planet and beyond, armed with a little awe and wonder.
